The Benefits of Pilates

Why Practice Pilates?

To help you achieve your wellness goals, we offer Pilates mat training. This low-impact form of exercise focuses on strengthening the core while improving postural alignment, balance, and flexibility.

If you are new to this kind of practice, you might find it helpful to know that Pilates mat work is rooted in a series of time-tested exercises that are performed in repetition, aimed at targeting particular areas of the body with precise movements and breath control.

Joseph Pilates (born in 1883) was a sickly child who developed this style of training during his own journey to wellness. During his journey towards wellbeing, he came to believe that our modern life-styles lead to poor posture and inefficient breathing - which in turn leads to many of the health issues we experience. Overcoming many obstacles, he made a name for himself as a boxer and gymnast in the early 1900's. After WWI, he worked with German dance and fitness to create a training regimen that connected the breath with isolated movements to improve physical performance. He and his wife, Clara moved to New York and in 1960 opened their first studio, working with highly acclaimed dancers like Balanchine, Martha Graham, and others.

Over the decades, Pilates has gained popularity beyond the dance world because of its proven ability to condition the body in ways that lead to increased stamina, improved balance, reduced stress, decreased back pain, and overall wellbeing.

Our 30 minute Pilates-based mat classes are designed to create a dynamic workout that will elevate your heart rate by engaging your whole being. You can expect to build up a light sweat and feel a burn at times in your muscles as we challenge you to grow and gain new strength. At the same time, we will always encourage you to stay within your limits and truly listen to your body, offering ample modifications to help you get the most out of your time on the mat.

Join us for class and see what a difference Pilates can make in your overall health and wellbeing!
